Finding Spoon-billed Sandpiper
Spoon-billed Sandpiper is a globally critically endangered species, with an estimated population of fewer than 500 individuals worldwide. In Hong Kong, although it is a rare spring migratory bird, Deep Bay remains one of its crucial habitats. Since 1957, Spoon-billed Sandpipers have been consistently recorded in Deep Bay every spring.
However, the number of Spoon-billed Sandpipers in Hong Kong has significantly declined over the past two decades. In 2023 and 2024, there were no records of this species throughout the entire year—the first time this has happened since 2002.
The decline of Spoon-billed Sandpipers may be linked to local habitat degradation, global population decline, and a lack of public reporting. Therefore, HKBWS’s Hong Kong Bird Race Fundraising Event 2025, adopts the theme "Finding Spoon-billed Sandpiper", aiming to raise public awareness and encourage birdwatchers to submit sightings.
We invite everyone to join hands in fundraising, with all proceeds going to support our bird conservation efforts, including regional conservation, research, and education projects for Spoon-billed Sandpiper.
Sign up now for the race or become a fundraising ambassador, and join us in protecting Spoon-billed Sandpipers and their habitat!
The Hong Kong Bird Watching Society has organized the Hong Kong Bird Race Fundraising Event annually since 2002. It is an essential event eagerly anticipated by birdwatchers. This event aims to raise funds for bird conservation, collect bird records in Hong Kong, and share the joy of birdwatching with the public.
