[Last Two Days of Consultation for the Mai Po Egretry!]
Recently, a private developer has applied to build a "smart" elderly home up to 38 meters high (nearly ten stories) next to the San Tin Technopole. The application claims that it will support innovation and technology development. However, the application site is directly adjacent to the critical breeding grounds in Mai Po for egrets and herons.
This egretry is the fifth largest egretries in the Deep Bay area, with over 20 years of breeding records, and holds significant ecological importance. During the breeding season, egrets and herons must frequently travel between their nests and the wetland in the Deep Bay area to forage for their chicks. Therefore, protecting them involves not only maintaining the egretry’s environment but also ensuring the safety of their feeding grounds and flight paths.
If this planning application is approved, it will result in extensive tree removal within the breeding area, and the future ten-story building will further obstruct the egrets and herons' access to the wetland.
This application is the first private development proposal since the development of the San Tin Technopole. The government's approval of the San Tin Technopole last year means that the breeding egrets and herons may lose a large area of fishponds for foraging. This proposed elderly home, along with the visual, noise, and human disturbances from the adjacent San Tin Technopole, could cumulatively cause the disappearance of this historically significant breeding site.
