(English version follows)

Monitoring populations of Black-faced Spoonbill and migratory waterbirds wintering in Xuan Thuy National Park 2024/25
HKBWS Asia Conservation Fund 2024-25 supported 5 conservation projects across the region. We have also consecutively supported the ‘Monitoring populations of Black-faced Spoonbill and migratory waterbirds wintering in Xuan Thuy National Park’ for three years since 2022.
The supported team executed a total of 21 field days of survey from October 2024 to March 2025. The maximum daily counts of migratory birds with more than 1,000 individuals in Con Lu. While for the species diversity, a total of 49 species of waterbirds were recorded, including 10 globally Threatened and Vulnerable species, such as Black-faced Spoonbill Platalea minor (EN), Great Knot Calidris tenuirostris (EN), Sharp-tailed Sandpiper Calidris acuminata (VU), and Grey Plover Pluvialis squatarola(VU). Worth mentioning is, the census of Black-faced Spoonbill 2025 on 17-19 January 2025 recorded 112 individuals, the highest number ever in Xuan Thuy National Park.
Besides from the promising data, the three-year long-term surveys not only help to better understand waterbird population and wetland conditions, but also greatly contributed to the dossier of Xuan Thuy National Park submitted by the Vietnamese government for recognition as an ASEAN Heritage Park.
Wetland and waterbird conservation require years of effort and dedication. We sincerely call on everyone to support these efforts so that we can protect more birds and their habitats together!
