(Eng version follows)

Movement and habitat use of threatened migratory shorebirds in Bako Buntal Bay, Malaysian Borneo
Supported by ACF 2024-25, ‘Movement and habitat use of threatened migratory shorebirds in Bako Buntal Bay, Malaysian Borneo’ has been finished successfully.
It is the first leg flagging and satellite tracking project in Malaysia and Borneo regions. The team leg flagged 8 Far Eastern Curlew (Endangered) with two leg flags on the right tibia, Yellow over Black engraved with unique alphanumeric combination. And seven of them were deployed with satellite trackers.
Out of seven tracked individuals, two adults undertook full migration and returned to provide us with one season of full cycle (northward and southward migration), and one juvenile undertook partial migration whereas the remaining over-summered in Bako Buntal Bay. The remaining juveniles over-summered in Bako Buntal Bay. The team also leg flagged other shorebirds (249 individuals) caught throughout the project period, making this the first leg flagging activity for Malaysia.
The research revealed the migration pattern of the wintering Far Eastern Curlew in Bako Buntal Bay. Providing us the important local movement data, and the ecological value of wetland like Bako Buntal Bay. This information will be useful in managing the site all year round.
It is our honor to be part of the support of the first leg flagging program in Malaysia, we hope the research could further attest to the importance of wetland to migratory waterbirds in the flyway. If you would like to contribute to bird conservation in Asia, please consider donating to HKBWS—part of your donation will go to the #AsianConservationFund each year.
