[Wild Brown Fish Owl appeared!]
The Brown Fish Owl is a rare nocturnal owl species in Hong Kong, with elusive behavior that makes it difficult to spot. There is a rumor that they can be found in the vicinity of water sources on Lantau Island, so our team of researchers set out to verify this information.
Two months ago, we started the passive acoustic monitoring research in Lantau Island, using recordings of bird calls to identify bird species. Within just two months, we have consistently recorded the vocalizations of Brown Fish Owls - deep booming Hoo-Hoo, at several locations. Furthermore, during regular nocturnal surveys, our researchers have even witnessed Brown Fish Owls firsthand at two survey sites!
Continuously monitoring and documenting the diverse calls of local owls allows us to gain a better understanding of their vocalization patterns and behaviour. This valuable information serves as a crucial foundation for owl conservation efforts.
