[Quick Review of Bird-window Collisions in Autumn]
According to public reports received on the "Global Bird Collision Mapper" platform, a total of 58 suspected bird-window collision victims, including 5 bird imprints, were recorded in Hong Kong from September to November this year. Over these three months, at least 13 bird species have been involved, such as Grey Nightjar, Pacific Golden Plover, Red-billed Starling, Crested Goshawk, Yellow-browed Warbler, Chestnut Bulbull, Lanceolated Warbler, Common Emerald Dove, Fork-tailed Sunbird, etc. (^ indicates newly recorded bird species involved in window collisions.)
Among the 58 suspected bird-window collision victims, 19 of them are Chestnut Bulbul occurring in November. This species prefers wooded area and are common winter visitors and resident in Hong Kong. November marks the beginning of their migration to Hong Kong or other wintering grounds. In the period of 2022-2023, Chestnut Bulbul was among the top 5 bird species recorded in window collisions, often occurring in group collision events, likely due to their gregarious behaviors.
Modern buildings often utilize larger areas of glass materials, making the bird-window collisions more prominent and drawing increasing public attention. Many governments in other regions have already launched new law to mandate specific new buildings to meet bird-friendly design requirements. We recommend that the Hong Kong government should promptly investigate new legislation for planning and designing new buildings locally to address the bird-window collision issue and minimize continuous biodiversity loss due to urban development.
