The first recorded observations of birds in Hong Kong were made in 1860 by the great Robert Swinhoe.  Other visiting naturalists followed in the early part of the 20th Century and since the 1930s there has been an almost unbroken tradition of bird recording in Hong Kong.  The Hong Kong Bird Watching Society was formed in late 1957 and the first annual report covered the year 1958.

This work analyses in details the 41 years of records subsequently collected by the Soceity and compares them with earlier observations and thus provides a thorough review of the Hong Kong List   The results of the first comprehensive breeding bird survey in HK are presented together with summaries of ringing activities and waterbird surveys.

The result is the most thorough explication of an avifauna available in the region, one that will provided an essential reference to all those interested in the birds of China, and indeed Asia as a whole.
